Gojjavalakki is a tasty tamarind based beaten rice or poha recipe of Karnataka. It can be had as a snack , breakfast and it can be had during travels and outings. This Mangalore style recipe contains ample amount of goodness and can be had without guilt. It is low in calories with less oil and can be made in a jiffy. Tangy and tasty, gojjavalakki is one sure hit recipe. Gojju means gravy in Kannada language and Avalakki is beaten rice. It is one of the tasty dishes I learnt after moving to Bangalore. Eastern Products offer a wide range of masala and spice mixes and I have made use of Eastern Puliyodhare mix here. This recipe is also called huli avalakki because of the tangy ,spicy and sweet taste it has. Mostly this dish is made with puliyodhare mixture. But you can substitute it with rasam powder or chilli powder.
I have used sesame oil here, which blends so well with the tamarind flavour. One of my Kannadiga friends suggested making use of thick poha for this. The reason being, thinner ones will turn very soggy and mushy. Also try to grind the poha mixture coarsely as it will give a crunchy taste. As coconut gives a nice nutty flavour, the garnishings with coconut adds a special taste to the recipe. I have tried many recipes using Poha. But this one turned out so well and I got a special thumbs up for this from the family. Check out my other poha recipes from my blog.
Gojjavalaki is yet another easy recipe with Poha that can be had any time of the day. Do try it out and let me know it.
Very nice recipe!!. Can we use red poha for this recipe?
