Thiruvathirai Kali is prepared and offered to Lord Shiva on the auspicious occasion of Thiruvathirai .This  falls on the Tamil month of Margazhi and the star of the day being Thiruvathirai or Arudhra{December-January} .It  happens on Pournami day or the full moon day. The delicacy called Kali is prepared on this day. Kali  is offered on a banana leaf and offered to Lord Nataraja or the dancing deity.

A seven curry kootu called Thalagam is made with mixed vegetables and spices in a tamarind gravy with coconut. I have already posted Thalagam in my blog and here is my Kali recipe for you. All our traditions and customs tell us how to celebrate and what to make for each occasion as an offering.

Thiruvadhirai  festival is celebrated with much pomp in Chidambaram temple . Lord Nataraja and his consort Shivagama Sundari adorn the beautiful temple. A grand 10 day festival is celebrated to make the occasion and all people flock to the temple to see the deities.

This delicious Kali that is made is so pleasing to eat in the winter mornings. As I grew up in New Delhi, I had the most  beautiful experience of eating and celebrating the occasion in the wintry mornings. My mother would make it and offer to GOD while still dark and the me and my brother would be reluctant to even get up from bed in the wee hours of the morning. This year this  festival falls on  the 10th of January. I have given here step wise pictures . For all the beginners, this post might be useful. Please ensure to powder the mixture coarsely or else, it will not taste good. Let us learn here to make the delicious Kali that can be made very easily with the ingredients mentioned here.
