Khara Bath is a classic breakfast of Karnataka. The melt in the mouth consistency of this delicacy is a hit among one and all. It is made with semolina or rava with mixed vegetables and spices. It is a very common tiffin item in the menu of many eateries in Karnataka. I have had this at many restaurants and have enjoyed it the most. My mother in la usually makes this using sambhar powder. But I have added Eastern Vangi Bath Masala Powder which added an authentic touch. to the recipe. You can even add Bisi Bele Bath Powder or simply red chilli powder. And this really tasted good in this chill weather with the fresh coconut chutney. In places like Veena Stores, a small yet famous outlet this sells like hot cakes. People line up in  long queues to taste this and other delicacies. This is so simple yet classy.

The key to making tasty Khara Bath is roasting the rava. If this is not done, then you won’t get that hotel taste. But as you do so, make sure, you don’t burn it. I have added a handful of vegetables, but even if you have only tomatoes and onions, this would taste good. Attaining a lovely soft texture is also important. It gives a nice soft feeling as you gobble it down. Unlike other upma varieties, there are one or two ingredients that add a special touch to the dish. They include adding a splash of ghee towards the end. Also squeezing half a lemon works wonders. You can raise the taste of a dish to a different by the addition of simple ingredients at home. Also adding coriander leaves adds a nice nutty flavour. Try out this delicious breakfast recipe and let me know how it turned out.
