BLACK URAD DAL RICE

Rice is a staple food and being a South Indian I do make a lot of rice varieties at home.I also pack them for lunch with any accompaniment such as raita or a curry.I was going through an old cookbook which had this recipe of Black Urad Dal Rice.In Tamil it is called Karuppu Ulundu and has innumerable health benefits.I have one Black Urad Dal tadka and it turned out be delicious as well.As far this rice goes,it is an easy to make recipe and if you have made this powder already,the rest is a breeze.

I have a variety of lunch box recipes in my blog.This one is a healthy addition to that list.I have learnt that black lentil has the richest source of proteins and vitamin B.The skin of this dal when removed is used extensively in the culinary preparations os papad,idlis,dosas and of course vadas.It is also used as an important tempering ingredient.It is also known to boost heart health and helps in anti-aging.But the skin is very nutritious and gives a smooth texture to the dish it is made in to.See down below the quickest of all recipes,Black Urad Dal rice.

Instructions
  1. In a pan add oil followed by mustard,urad dal, channa dal, red chilli and asafoetida.
  2. In the same pan dry roast black urad dal and fry till nice aroma comes.
  3. Transfer both the contents to a blender once cooled.
  4. Powder coarsely.
  5. Cook rice and allow it to cool down and add urad dal powder to it.Also add salt and mix well.
  6. Black Urad Dal Rice is ready.I served it with Potato Fry.

Notes

You can add chopped coconut pieces or grated coconut for garnish.

Add curry leaves while tempering.

You can also add grren chilli,but in that case you may not be able to store the powder longer.
