Many of you might be familiar with Lady’s Finger recipes such as Bhindi Kurkure, Alu Bhindi Fry,Vendakai Curry etc.I have these recipes in my blog and make many bhindi recipes as it is a favorite vegetable at home.This Puli Pachadi from lady’s finger is an authentic dish unknown to many with sweet and sour tastes good enough to tantalize your taste buds.Basically this recipe is Okra in tamarind sauce with spices and jaggery boiled and thickened to perfection.I also didn’t know one such recipe existed but when I was casually searching for lady’s finger recipes,I saw this recipe and was inclined to try this soon.

This is somewhat like Kuzhambu,a south Indian gravy,but has lot of ladies finger added to it.So whenever you are preparing Arisi Upma ,Pidi Kozhakattai,Idli or Dosa,try this tangy side dish and Iam sure you will like it.The same way can be followed and in place of Lady’s Finger you can use Bitter Gourd.Also this tastes awesome when just mixed with rice.If making this you don’t need to make any gravy for rice.This recipe is common to most Tambrahm households and is enjoyed immensely.So try out this tangy and sweet pachadi recipe for any your main course dishes..

Instructions
  1. Soak tamarind in water.
  2. Chop lady's finger and set aside.
  3. In a pan add sesame oil,mustard,channa dal ,red and green chillies.
  4. Add chopped lady's finger.
  5. Add turmeric powder and asafoetida.
  6. Mix well and let the vegetable turn soft.
  7. Add tamarind extract,sambhar powder and salt.Let it boil till raw smell goes away.
  8. Mix rice flour in water and make a slurry.
  9. Add this mixture to the lady's finger gravy.
  10. Add jaggery.
  11. Switch off the flame after 5 minutes.
  12. Vendakkai Puli Pachadi is ready.Serve with rice,idli or dosa or with almost anything you like.

Notes

You can make this pachadi with bitter gourd or brinjal.

You can add only red or only green chillies.

You can also add red chilli powder in place of sambhar powder.

Use sesame oil for that authentic taste.
