Uppu Seedai is a traditional snack made during Krishna Jayanthi festival.This snack is made with rice flour and urad dal flour and lots of butter.I remember mom it in large batches usually 5-6.It is a tedious process of rolling the balls and me with my brother would help mom rolling these cute little seedai balls.It may appear that we are making many balls,but when you fry them and take out,you will see they are only a few.It can be stored for over a week and can be enjoyed later too.Many people are scared of making seedais at home,mainly for the reason that they burst.I have given a few tips at the end to prevent these.So  enjoy making seedais at home and offer as naivedhyam to LORD KRISHNA.

  1. In a wide bowl add rice flour,urad dal flour,jeera,sesame and asafoetida.Now add butter,grated coconut and salt.
  2. Adding water and oil and knead the dough.
  3. Make small balls out of the dough and place on a clean towel.
  4. Put them in a pan of hot oil.
  5. Once golden brown take them out.
  6. Drain excess oil with the help of an oil strainer.
  7. Uppu Seedai/Salt Seedai is ready for offering to LORD KRISHNA as naivedhyam.

Notes

  • In order that seedais don’t burst sieve rice and urad dal flours well before use.
  • Rice flour should not be wet,dry roast it before use.See preparation of  homemade urad dal and rice flours following the link given.
  • Don’t roll the balls too tight,as it might cause the balls to burst.
  • After rolling out seedais spread them on a dry towel or newspaper to absorb moisture in them,as the wetness in them may also cause bursting.
  • If planning to use seedais for longer time dry roast cococnut and use.
