THAVALA VADA

 

 

No this is not ordinary vada,but vada with a twist.Yet again a recipe known to a few i found this during my recent visit to my mother’s place.She learnt it from her granny and this recipe is a tanjore district speciality.Many make it like bonda balls but i like to make this as i was taught and it’s crunchy and chewy with coconut pieces in the middle,it’s awesome.The smooth lentils and crispy rice gives a tasty outer and soft inner texture to the thavala vadas.The highlight here is the fusion  of different type of lentils and rice.This is a filling and protein loaded snack apt for any rainy day.Truly mesmerising…go on too see the recipe below

Instructions
  1. Soak all dals and rice for 1 hour.
  2. Put them in a blender.
  3. Grind coarsely.
  4. Take it in a vessel.Add chopped onions cut pieces of coconut green chilly pieces,salt and asafoetida.
  5. Temper in oil mustard seeds and curry leaves and pour that in the vada batter.Flatten in a plastic sheet.
  6. Heat oil and fry one by one.
  7. Till golden brown.
  8. Serve hot with coconut chutney .

Notes

  • You could avoid onion if you want.
  • Coconut pieces are a must since they add a nice crunch to the vada.
  • You make fry like bondas too.
