ONION THOKKU

Onion Thokku is a tasty side dish to Idlis, Dosas, Chappathis or Curd Rice. I learnt this recipe from a magazine and it was a super hit at home. This thokku calls for using shallots or sambhar onions which has a distinct flavour. Generally this is very apt during travels where there will be talks and enjoyment all over. I have a few recipe of thokku in my blog like Gooseberry Thokku, Tomato Thokku and Mango Thokku. This stays well for over 15 days if stored well in fridge. I have started making this quite often nowadays whenever I find it hard to make chutneys. This is an easy to make recipe and is made in a hard bottomed vessel which ensures quick cooking but gives a unique taste too. These onions have a slight sweet which when sauteed with red chillies and tamarind adds a phenominal taste which is just out of the world.

I did not count how much idlis I ate when I made this onion thokku for the first time. This thokku can be made with the addition of a few garlic pods, but I did not add. There are many varieties of thokku and pickles available online and in shops. But it is always healthy to make any homemade one and so this easy to make and yet not compromising on the taste recipe falls in the correct place. Since I love pickles a lot I make some pickle or the other besides buying these from shops. The small onions are also called Madras Onions and I always have a stock of them in my pantry. These caramalized small onions add a tingling taste to your tongue when it hits there. The Proper sauteeing helps in keeping the thokku for a longer period of time. Try out this tangy thokku for your favorite tiffin item.
