VELLA SADAM/JAGGERY RICE

 

 

Vella Sadam or jaggery rice is a tasty rice made during the fesival ADI PERUUKU.This festival falls in the 18th day of the tamil calendar month aadi.Aadi Perukku is the monsoon festival that is celebrated across the state of Tamil Nadu.After the heat waves settle down and people long for something cool this festival comes as a blessing.This festival is also called Padinettu Perukku which signifies the rising level of water in the rivers.Women do offerings in the river and take with them variety o rice dishes and eat in the river banks after offerings.This vellam sadam is one such dish made during the festive occasion.Scroll down below the flavourul rice with jaggery.

Instructions
  1. In a pan add powdered jaggery and add water
  2. Add a cup of water and boil.Make a syrup adding cardamom powder.
  3. Wait till you attain the shown consistency.
  4. In a laddle add ghee and fry cashewnuts and raisins till golden brown
  5. Cook rice and allow it cool.
  6. Add rice to the jaggery mixture
  7. Mix well the jaggery mixture and rice.Add ghee and cook for a while
  8. Vella Sadam or Jaggery Rice is ready for naivedhyam.Offer this to GOD and enjoy with your loved ones.

Notes.

You can add edible camphor for extra taste.

If you find the rice grains too hard after mixing with the jaggery add 1/4 cup of milk and cook.

Adding cut coconut pieces also adds to the taste.
